These days, that is pretty hard to find in a reasonably priced control surface. It will also act as a mixer on playback (aka: control surface) for all the channels you have recorded. You can also plug in four mics and 8 line levels signals at once (but only record a combination of 4 mics and 4 line levels, or maximum 8 line levels at once). It is an interface and a control surface in one. (people here already know the next part) - That is why I use a used Digidesign Digi003.
I am pretty sure there are some units that connect to computers through light pipe (optical) and can send 8 channels at once (I have never done it, but I have seen a lot of people talk about it), but I think you need to look into the difference between a "mixer" and a "control surface" and an "interface" It is actually pretty rare these days to find an all-in-one that works as a mixer for a DAW and an interface. The Zoom mixer's usb is only for loading files - it is not an interface for recording, sorry. The Midas Venice U16 seems awesome but more than I want to spend and probably more than I need unless I suddenly needed to record a drummer. In each case, the specs are great, but I am worried by the poor reputations of these manufacturers, as well as some known issues evident on forums and in reviews. I am aware of the Behringer Xenyx UFX1204, Alesis MultiMix 8 USB 2.0, Phonic Helix Board 12 Universal and their higher-channel-number brethren. Most USB mixers only send the stereo bus out to USB, but there are a scant few that send each channel to a separate track, for multitracking in a DAW. Since a mixer would make life easier, and I need an interface, I have been looking at the analog mixers with USB interfaces that surfaced about three years ago.

But a lot of my recording and writing workflow gets done on a PC (some sequencing, MIDI stuff and sampling, tracking, editing, mixing, mastering). I have been wishing for a while now that I had a good mixer, mainly so I can leave everything plugged in and set up so as to play anything at a moment's notice without fussing with cables. 1 or 2 Hi-Zinputs would be nice for guest users but not necessary as I have a guitar preamp in case I want to DI a guitar. I don't yet have a good mic preamp for my Shure beta 87 condenser, so that is another piece of the puzzle. I would like to mic two amp cabs, one or two mics for vocals, 2 lines in for roland gr33 guitar synth, 2 more for a korg ms2000r.

Plus if I get more equipment down the road I don't want to run out of routing options. I mainly do solo projects but collaborations are important to me so I want to be able to work with at least two or three other musicians-meaning 8 or more tracks. I am using AKG open-back K240 studio headphones for monitoring (no reference monitors, only pc speakers currently). It is just serving as a patchbay, and until my most recent PC failure, I was going into an Audiophile 24/96 PCI card for basic stereo overdub recording.
Currently everything is plugged into a late-Triassic era Tascam 788 that takes a while to get up and running. I have a bit of gear (guitars, amps, guitar synth, mics, keyboard, outboard synth, beat machine, pc output).
Of course, I know that digital audio interfaces have a short half-life. I want something that will sound great and have a place in my rig for many years to come without any need for upgrade. I am trying once again to fill that niche, and it seems like the market is as before: saturated with products that get a lot right but leave a few crucial parts utterly and horribly wrong. Many of them have been disappointing, for various reasons. I have been through many audio interfaces and multitrackers in my days as an amateur recording artist. There is a ton of new stuff to select from on the market so I am hoping for some recommendations. I buy based on (my perceived) value, and I generally do a lot of research to find the best bang for my buck, whether it's a little buck or big buck. My budget is somewhat flexible ($500? $1000?).

Software-wise, lately I have been using Presonus Studio One 2 (I'm not married to any DAW though), and for writing, Guitar Pro 5 and sometimes Finale and BiaB. I intend to use it for my music stuff too, and that means I am suddenly in the market for a new USB audio interface. I selected it based on my needs for work, and so I have 4 USB 3.0 ports but no firewire or thunderport. My desktop recently died, and I got a 2.5 GHz quad core i7 laptop (8 GB RAM, Win 8.1, 圆4) as a replacement this time around.
